ATM Cash Protection: France 3 report Print E-mail

Host:
Last weekend an ATM was ripped out with a stolen vehicle out of a “Mercurey” shop in Saône-et-Loire. This was a new generation of ATM equipped with break-in sensors. The banknotes were stained by an indelible ink, making them unusable and the robbers fled without loot. This is the first time in France when protection system proved its effectiveness. More about technology invented in Dijon over 20 years ago from Murielle Bessard and Fabrice Chrisment.

Luc Brient:
Here is a bank note which was neutralized by our ink, a colouring agent which is absolutely indelible.

Reporter:
This is what bank notes from Mercurey's ATM turned into. This invention was designed in Dijon in the 80s to protect cash transportation and is based on the principle of deterrence.

Thibaut Plagne:
This is what happens in case of attack.

Luc Brient:
Tilt sensors (in case of ripping out of an ATM), temperature sensors, sensors to detect gas and explosives, sensors to detect vibration... It is, in fact, a combination of sensors connected to electronics which allows to detect the slightest abnormality and to trigger the system to spay ink through these ramps on all bank notes of each ATM cassette.

Reporter:
Today, 2/3 of CIT companies have adopted  Cash Degradation systems and the number of attacks had decreased. And from now on thieves will look for another source of cash: ATMs; therefore, the banks start to equip their machines.

Luc Brient:
Today, mainly in eastern France, there are several hundred of ATMs belonging to bank networks belonging to bank network equipped with this system.

Reporter:
If you own a stained banknote - it was probably stolen. Just bring it to your bank, or Banque De France, and you will be reimbursed.
